Resting in the shadow along the river the kids came to check out the lone foreigner. They probably heard me trying to play on a bamboo flute I had bought from a rattan peddler earlier and decided to join the fun. When I left, I gave the flute to the kids (who played much better than me :) and even 10 years later I can still hear the sound some times, on a really hot summer day near a river.

Right here on the Cambodian side are deep pools, that used to be inhabited, including during my visits in 2012 and 2013, by one of the last remaining populations of the critically endangered Irrawaddy dolphins. In an IUCN report from 2023 however I read the dolphins are no longer here, and even fewer now remain some 150km down river near Kratie. Changed hydrology caused by dams upstream, combined with illegal fishing and logging, all exacerbated by climate change, are factors in the damage to these ecosystems.

Over a width of 10km myriad arms and channels create many little islands, some inhabited, giving the area it's name 'Si Pan Don' (4000 islands).

This area here has so far been spared a hydropower dam, but likely not much longer as one is in planning here too. The Greater Mekong region is considered one of the richest biodiverse areas in the world. According to a WWF report 224 plant and vertebrate animal species were discovered in the Greater Mekong region (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam) in 2020 alone.

Cambodia is a country with few opportunities; and people's general welcoming friendliness, their ingenuity and perseverance is really impressive.
